RECOMBINANT SEATING [RD]
Privately Commissioned / Exhibited Variation
Mutable modular table-seating system
San Francisco, CA
2001
Materials: Aluminum, stainless steel, Plyboo™, glass, Knoll Una™ fabric (Suzanne Tick Design ©1999), Novasuede™, silicon, fiberglass, closed cell foam.

Exhibited Prototype Size: D 104" x L 169" x H 40".

This grouping of three distinct design projects illustrates the way the recombination of repeating components changes both the form and function of the space surrounding the composition. "Recombinant seating" deliberately challenges the limitations of furniture design by serving as a distinct architectural element that directly informs the room it inhabits. Included in its construction are two Scissor Tables, one Seven Upright Table, and a private commission called "Ron and Charlie's Breakfast Room." The L-shaped configuration and tilting lounge backs allow a couple to sit formally or informally, and continues the theme of modular adaptability first introduced by the Scissor and Seven Upright Tables. This combination is one of many possible variations that expresses my deliberate tendency to blur the language of conventional architectural space through ambiguous hybrid programming.
