RECOMBINANT SEATING [RD]
Privately Commissioned / Exhibited Variation
Mutable modular table-seating system
San Francisco, CA
2001

This grouping of three distinct design projects illustrates the way the recombination of repeating components changes both the form and function of the space surrounding the composition. "Recombinant seating" deliberately challenges the limitations of furniture design by serving as a distinct architectural element that directly informs the room it inhabits. Included in its construction are two Scissor Tables, one Seven Upright Table, and a private commission called "Ron and Charlie's Breakfast Room." The L-shaped configuration and tilting lounge backs allow a couple to sit formally or informally, and continues the theme of modular adaptability first introduced by the Scissor and Seven Upright Tables. This combination is one of many possible variations that expresses my deliberate tendency to blur the language of conventional architectural space through ambiguous hybrid programming.

The Scissor Table synthesizes many uses into one site responsive table. This simple mutable table is designed to blur the conventional boundaries of living and working spaces. Its height articulates between 18" and 30" to serve as either a low coffee or cocktail table, a working computer or game table, or a full height dining or writing table.
